When Luxury Services Become Necessities

Often when a new service becomes available, we see it as a luxury for a time, then as something that we really should have, and finally as a virtual necessity. The example of home entertainment shows this trend quote well.

Back in the first days of television, most families had a console radio. Often a family would gather around the radio and listen to a favorite program on a regular basis. The radio was really the first home cinema, although one might say it was really theater of the mind. Television, when it first became available, was a rarity. While most people knew at least one family who owned a television set, parents often quipped that it was a waste of money and the radio was just fine. Picture quality was poor and the screen was very small. Yet, all the neighborhood kids often ended up in the house that had a television watching the grainy pictures.

The quality of television got better, the economy strengthened, and then everyone needed at television. Today, if you tell a stranger that your family doesn’t own a television, they look askance and wonder if you are, perhaps, of Amish descent. In a short period of time, the television went from a rare luxury to a universal necessity.

The growth of television sets and dissatisfaction with the quality of over the air broadcasts led to cable television. While still not universal, cable has become nearly so. The increased number of available channel options, higher picture quality, and other benefits have led most consumers to choose to pay for television service that is available for free via over the air broadcasts.

Now, we are in the latter stages of another such conversion. This time it’s internet service. Once reserved for academics or pointy-headed geeks, the internet has become a major source of information, a valuable tool for job hunting, a source of social interaction, and so much more that it is an almost universal necessity. Even the move from dial-up service to broadband reflects the growing necessity of high speed internet service.

As in any time of technological change, there are a number of providers vying for your business. Consumers making the switch to broadband internet service need to make sure they are choosing the best option for their needs, particularly since broadband service often comes with a long term contract that can be difficult to escape. Consumers need to compare broadband providers and the contracts they offer carefully before signing up with them. Good web-based broadband comparison sites like broadband.co.uk not only help you compare the top providers side by side, but also provide tutorials on various terms and concepts related to broadband so that those comparisons make more sense for the average person.

This is quite a different scheme than the first cable television service which was largely provided in a monopolistic fashion by a single available provider. Consumers were faced with a take it or leave ultimatum. With broadband service comparison sites and many available providers, there is no excuse for the modern consumer to settle for second best.
